Tim is Seniors Champion

Round 1 – The Seniors Championship had a great field with 66 players entering to compete at Newbury & Crookham. The players went out today wanting to make the most of the calm weather. Alistair Booth (Frilford Heath) did just that going out early and setting a clubhouse target of 75 (+6), which at the end of round one left him T10 along with four other players. Jeremy Platt (East Berkshire) had a great back nine which allowed him to sneak ahead with a 73 (+4).

However, Jeremy didn’t stay top of the leaderboard for long as Andy Elmey (Frilford Heath) shot -1 on the back nine with an eagle to finish +2 (71). Andy’s 71 kept him 1 shot clear of Tim Whittaker (Beaconsfield) heading into the final round. The final players coming in were unable to match Andy’s 71 as 2020 Seniors Champion George Wilson shot 74. Mike Sanders (Beaconsfield) and David Cromie (East Berkshire) go into the final round 2 shots back, with 18 players within 5 shots of the leader it could be an exciting finish tomorrow!

Overnight leader Andy Elmey (Frilford Heath)

Round 2 – As the players started their second round, the rain started to threaten. Mark Stokes (Studley Wood) had a solid second round shooting 75 (+6) to take the clubhouse lead before the final groups made their way in. The rain eased a little as the leaders made their way onto the back nine and with a lot of golf left to play, it was anyone’s trophy. Mike Sanders (Beaconsfield) took the clubhouse lead after shooting a very impressive 69 (level par). Mike’s score looked hard to beat until Tim Whittaker (Beaconsfield) had 7 birdies on his way to shooting -1 to finish 2 shots clear. Two of those birdies came on the 16th and 18th – just when needed. A great performance in some very challenging conditions! Congratulations to Tim on becoming the BB&O Seniors Champion for the second time having also prevailed at his home club in 2015.

In the age categories, Gregor Brown (Frilford Heath) was able to defend the Over 70’s trophy with +17. Ashley Brewer (Denham) had a solid second round which allowed him to sneak ahead and win the 65-69 trophy by 3 shots. Along with the main event, Tim also took home the trophy for the best 60-64 player. Mike Sander’s level par second round secured him the win in the 55-59 category. Congratulations to Kevin Murray (Frilford Heath) who won the nett prize on count back to Nicholas Lane (East Berkshire).

Congratulation to all our winners! Thank you to Newbury & Crookham for hosting a great event.
