87th Amateur Championship

87th Amateur Championship

John Kemp (Woburn) finished in style with an excellent 3 under par 69 in the fourth round to win the Championship by 2 shots. Going in to the final round Tom Butterworth (Harewood Downs) was leading after 3 great rounds on a very long and demanding golf course. Close behind was David Langley, followed then by Tim Shin and George Gardner, all of whom are from Castle Royle. Pity there is no Team Prize!

After 9 holes in the final round, the lead was still much the same, although Tim Shin was making a big move playing the front in 4 under par and John Kemp was coming into contention reaching the turn in 2 under. Then the really tough back 9 started to take its toll allowing John Kemp to move up the leaderboard by handling the back nine better than anyone else with a 1 under par homeward 9 holes. He finished 2 ahead of Tom Butterworth, Tim Shin and David Langley.

Ben Jenks (Buckingham) was the worthy winner of the Penfold Trophy which is now awarded to the leading Handicap score after the first 36 holes. He finished on 143, 3 shots ahead of TomButterworth.

All the players were reported to have slept well on Saturday having walked approximately 18 miles, over two days, in very warm sunshine.
