John is BB&O Amateur Champion

The weather wasn’t kind for the players in the Amateur Championship with strong winds and rain on the Friday. However the storms didn’t stop John Gough (Stoke Park) who shot a very solid 68 (-2), closely followed by James Brockington (Henley) firing a 69 in the morning round. As the day progressed the weather got worse, John was able to maintain his form by shooting a 71 in the afternoon. Tom Lawson (Stoke Park) and Olly Huggins (Frilford Heath) were able to match this score and were only a couple shots back heading into the final rounds. With the top 16 and ties progressing to the Saturday the players knuckled down in the bad weather. Matin Eisa (Sand Martins) shot two very respectable rounds of 73 and 75 to win the Penfold Trophy on countback to Oscar Fuentes (Bearwood Lakes).

There were 20 players who progressed to the final rounds with a total of +11 making the cut. The wind picked up making Saturday a very tough scoring day. Shane Slatter (Calcot Park) and Olly Huggins both shot the lowest morning round of 72, this meant that Olly was only 2 shots back heading into the final round. John shot 75 in the morning giving him a one shot lead ahead of Tom Lawson, who maintained his form and fired a 73. With the chasing pack not far behind it was all to play for in the afternoon. Melan Dhaubhadel (Calcot Park) shot the best round of the day 69 (-1) in tough conditions in the afternoon. It became close on the back nine between Olly Huggins, Tom Lawson and John Gough. John kept his round going and was able to grind a round of 70 (level) to clinch the title with a 284 (+4) total.
