European Men’s Team Championship

Bryan Hughes, the new Seniors’ Amateur Champion, is included in England’s six-man side for the European senior men’s team championship.

Hughes, from Lancashire, will be joined by English senior champion Doug Cameron (pictured) from Oxfordshire, Ian Crowther also of Lancashire, Stephen East of Yorkshire, Alan Mew of Hampshire and Mark Stones of Essex.

The championship will be played at the PGA Sweden National Golf Club from 5-9 September. Last year England won the bronze medal. The same six players, together with Ian Attoe of Surrey, will defend England’s title in the Senior Men’s Home Internationals at Rosslare Golf Club, Ireland, from 26-28 September.

The players:

Ian Attoe (Worplesdon) was the English senior champion in 2015 and was third in this season’s Welsh senior championship.

Doug Cameron (Henley), returns to the side after winning the English senior men’s amateur championship at Saunton, Devon, earlier this season.

Ian Crowther (Royal Lytham & St Annes) is the Welsh senior champion and also had a top ten finish in the Seniors’ Amateur Championship.

Stephen East (Wike Ride) is a past winner of the English, Spanish, Portuguese and Scottish senior titles.  He also won the England Golf senior order of merit in 2014 and 2016.

Bryan Hughes (Hesketh) became the first Englishman since 2003 to win the Seniors’ Amateur Championship at Sunningdale, where he shot three-under 67 in the final round.

Alan Mew (Stoneham) has consistently high results in senior events, most recently as the runner-up in the Bill Shankland Memorial Trophy at Parkstone, Dorset.

Mark Stones (Boyce Hill) was runner-up in the Welsh seniors among other high finishes which have taken him to fifth place on the senior order of merit.
