Junior Championship

The 2017 Junior Championship on paper looked set to be a thriller and it certainly lived up to this. Buckinghamshire Golf Club hosted the event and with a lot of rainfall in the days leading up to the event it was a relief that the rain had stopped and scoring conditions were very good. In the morning the course played difficult with nobody breaking par. Thomas Lawton (East Berkshire) and Sebastian Donaldson (Buckinghamshire) held the lunchtime lead with a credible 72 (Level). In the chasing pack which featured many of the Junior Elite Squad were Harrison Arnold (Castle Royle) 74, Taylor Paul (Stoke Park) 75, Gregor McKenzie (Kirtlington) 74, Kristian Donaldson (Buckinghamshire) 75 and Charlie Herbert (Harewood Downs) 75. This left it all to play for in the afternoon.

The scoring was considerably better in the afternoon as the boys got to grips with the demanding course. Melan Dhaubhadel (Calcot Park) fired a magnificent best of the day 66 (-6). This combined with his morning round of 78 left him on 144 (Level) setting the benchmark with a few groups still out on the course. Sebastain Donaldson could only match this and fired a 72 to go with his morning 72 to leave him on the same score. Older brother and defending champion Kristian was unable to defend his title but a valiant total of 146 wasn’t far off the pace. With just one group left out on the course it was very tense but this didn’t seem to affect Charlie Herbert who fired an afternoon round of 68 (-4) to go with his opening 75 (+3) to secure him the trophy with a superb total of 143 (-1). Melan pipped Sebastian to second place on countback.

The U15 trophy was won by Taylor Paul (Stoke Park) with 149 (+5) with Will Tate in second on 153 (+9). The U16 trophy was won by Melan Dhaubhadel who as he did in the main event pipped Sebastian Donaldson on countback. The Handicap Trophy was won by home player Dillon West (Buckinghamshire) whose 138 who beat the newly crowned U14 Champion Ben McFadden (Stoke Park) who had 140.

A huge thank you from BB&O and all the competitors to the members and staff at Buckinghamshire Golf Club for allowing us use of the course of which was presented fantastically.
