Teddy is Douglas Johns Champion

The annual Douglas Johns Trophy held at Harewood Downs Golf Club took place on Thursday 27th July. The event attracts the best U15’s from around the country as they compete in the hope of adding their name on the same trophy as Alex Fitzpatrick, Oliver Fisher and Justin Rose. In the first round, Teddy Hobbs from Chigwell had a very tidy card with 4 birdies and 1 bogey to take the lead with a gross 66. Albie Beeston (North Hants) & Joshua Thompson (Wentworth) sat 4 shots back after shooting level par 70s and Ben Sessions (Bishops Stortford) finished just behind on 71. Sander Andreasen (Wexham Park) was the highest placed BB&O player after the morning round with a gross 74. With a 4 shot lead after the first round Teddy Hobbs looked in control of the event.

The afternoon rounds started to heat up as the boys were shooting lower and playing their way into contention. Frederick Gill (Stoneham) went 6 shots lower in the afternoon shooting level par and catapulted himself up the leaderboard. Frederick finished at the top of the nett leaderboard winning with a -2 total. Teddy continued his fine form but was unable to match his morning round of 66 finishing -1 for the tournament. Teddy’s afternoon round left the door open for the other competitors to make a move. Unaware of what was needed, Joshua Thompson eagled 13 and birdied 14 &15 to finish the afternoon round with a score of 67. By the time Josh reached the last, he had an inkling that he may be in contention and his clutch putt on the 18th green forced a play-off between himself and Teddy. Both players finished on -1, 2 shots ahead of their next competitor.

The sudden death play off started on the10th hole and both players hit great tee shots under pressure. Josh played into the green first, hitting his approach to 25ft. Teddy replied with a great wedge shot to 15ft above the pin. Knowing he needed to go for the putt, Josh’s putt slid by the hole finishing 7ft past. All Teddy needed to do was hit his putt close and hope it went in. Teddy’s putt shaved the hole leaving him a 2ft putt back. Josh’s par putt narrowly missed, leaving Teddy to hole an uphill 2ft putt to lift the trophy…and hole it he did! Well played to both Teddy and Josh, it was a very close battle.

Congratulations to Teddy Hobbs, the 2023 Douglas Johns Champion!
