U16’s V Middlesex & Hertfordshire

It felt more like a cold winters day than mid August, when the U16 boys played their arch rivals Hertfordshire and Middlesex at Hendon Golf Club. Whilst Hendon is not a long course, accuracy and club selection off the tee is critical to playing well. The format was 8 x triangular singles , match play. A fun format, that always provides excitement. Our strongest opponents at this age group are Hertforshire and today was no exception.

In our top two matches, Melan had a frustrating day and narrowly lost both matches. James Gregory found his  Herts opponent in supreme form and also lost his match, but fought back well to secure a half against Midllesex. So with the top of the order struggling to put points on the board, it was crucial that the lower order remained calm and secured points from their matches. They didn’t disappoint!

Archie Smith was in super form from the start and took an early lead in both matches. Shot of the day was him holing out for eagle from 117 yards, on the par 5 8th. He knows how to impress and delivered this shot in front of our President, Alistair ! Archie  went on to win both his matches. Oscar Fuentes was also in fine form and despite losing a couple of holes mid round, calmly secured 2 victories.

Struan Hancock played a true captain’s innings ! He won his match against Middlesex easily, but was one down with three to play against Herts. He got up and down from off the green to win the 16th and tie the match. He fought magnificently to secure a half and this proved to be vital to the overall match. Will Tate also shrugged off the disappointment of a few lost holes mid round and pushed on to secure his two wins. New to the team, Jack Coleman, also maintained his composure, trading holes with his opponents, he emerged a winner in both matches and inflicted the biggest defeat against Herts 7&5.

And the spirit of perseverance and fighting back, was also evident in Ryan Walker’ s attitude as he made sure he won his match against Middlesex even though he had lost against Herts. The final scores were BB&O 4.5 Herts 3.5 and BB&O 6.5 Middlesex 1.5.

This was a brilliant team performance. The spirit and attitude was excellent and the determination to keep fighting was a delight to watch.
