BB&O Perform in The Amateur Championship

BB&O Perform in The Amateur Championship

The Amateur Championship is taking place at Nairn Golf Club with seven BB&O players competing in the event. After the first round of the match play Alex Stubbs (Frilford Heath) looked in a strong position to qualify for the match play. John Gough (Stoke Park) had a great second round being five under standing on the 18th tee when unfortunately he took a 7 down the last to miss the cut by 1 shot. Alex just fell outside the top 64 after a tough second round. Rory Browne (Feldon Valley), Olly Huggins (Frilford Heath) and Conor Gough (Stoke Park) stepped it up a notch in round 2, all producing under par scores to sneak into the match play qualification.

Rory Browne stormed out the blocks and was 6 up after 12 holes resulting in a 4&3 victory. Conor had a tough match against the home favourite and gave him a great match but just fell short of making it through to the next round. Olly’s match was nip and tuck the whole way and he was 1 down after 15 but then Olly fought back and won his match on the 19th hole!

Rory’s match was very tight with it going down the 19th, unfortunately he didn’t progress to the next round. Similarly, Olly’s match was down to the wire with it going either way. Olly beat his opponent on the 18th and progresses to the next round this afternoon.

Olly was 2 down early on in the next match however he fought back to be all square after 9. Olly then took control of the match going up and maintaining his lead eventually winning his match 3&1 to progress to the quarter finals! Jack Dyer, a Walker Cup player,  lead the way in Olly’s match being 3 up after 9. Olly’s level par back nine came up against a couple of birdies on 10 and 15 which unfortunately resulted in a 5&3 loss.

A strong performance by all BB&O players in The British Amateur and congratulations to Olly for making the final 8!
