BB&O Qualify for the England Golf Men’s County Finals

BB&O Qualify for the England Golf Men’s County Finals

Another stellar performance from the very best players within BB&O proved too strong for the other South Eastern counties and assured them of a place in the England Golf County Finals. The very best six players from eleven counties met at Eaton Golf Club in Norfolk to establish which South Eastern Group county would progress to the national finals. This is the strongest regional qualifying group and the scores were particularly impressive this year. Among our opponents were some of the finest amateur golfers in the country and many had represented their country in Home Internationals and The Walker Cup.

Olly Huggins (Frilford Heath) set the standard with an opening 67 which included a double bogey on the difficult last hole. He followed that up with a second round of 70. Rory Browne (Feldon Valley) was as solid as ever with a -1 total for the day and Harrison Arnold (Castle Royle) showed just how much depth our squad has when his 71, 73 score (+3) wasn’t required in the team result. Ben Quick (Beaconsfield) continued with his successful season by contributing scores of 71 and 67.

Ben Loveard (Woburn)  produced more stunning golf. He deserves a special mention as he represented the Boy’s Six Man team in last weeks qualifiers. Between the two events, under intense pressure, he scored a combined score of 18 under par! His 9 under par total in this qualifier was bettered only by Conor Gough (Stoke Park) who delivered a masterclass in the second round by shooting 61 (-9). This included 6 successive birdies on his back 9, a run only ended by narrowly missing his final three birdies with putts that all shaved the hole.

The standard of golf displayed both last week and this week by our two teams demonstrated just how healthy amateur golf is within BB&O and the Team Manager, Simon Hopkins, has done a brilliant job in bringing these talented golfers together. With the help and support of all club members within the BB&O we have guaranteed a talent pathway that must produce future “tour stars” and mean that we have played our part in future Ryder Cup and major golf success.
