County Finals – Day 2

Pre tournament favourites Yorkshire were always going to be tough to beat but going into the afternoon singles a point down made the job all the more difficult. Although David Langley and Olly Huggins had secured an early foursomes point in the top match, the other two matches went to Yorkshire. The combinations of Tim Shin and Alex Nicholls as well as Adam Birdeye and George Baylis were  unable to overcome their opponents leaving BB&O 2-1 down after the morning session.

In the singles, David Langley lost to fellow international David Hague. The Yorkshireman played a flawless, bogey free round of golf. Wins from Harrison Arnold, Tim Shin and George Baylis meant that a win in the last match out on the golf course would secure the result needed to have a chance on Sunday.

Adam Birdsey won the 16th and both he and Ben Schmidt (Yorkshire) hit great drives off the 17th tee. Unfortunately Adam’s second shot into the green was a little long and went into the back of a green side bunker. A brave putt wasn’t enough and Yorkshire were then one up with one to play. Adam parred the 18th leaving Schmidt a testing 5 foot putt fot the match which he duly holed.

The two narrow losses over the last couple of days now makes the County Championship out of reach but a win over Sunday’s difficult opponents (Lincolnshire) would be the very least this talented team deserves.
