Seniors Championship

Seniors Championship

There were 45 entrants for the 2018 Seniors Championship which was held at Ellesborough GC. Day 1 was a bright day with a gentle breeze but Ellesborough showed its teeth around the greens and the scores reflected this. Columb Harrington (Bicester) fired a best of the day 70 (-1) to hold a one stroke lead gong into day 2. Trying to chase down Columb was Mike Sanders (Beaconsfield) who shot 71 and back in third was Douglas Cameron (Calcot Park) with 75.

Day 2 and the breeze was up with a noticeable drop in the temperature which made it a more difficult day for scoring. Columb didn’t let this affect him and he fired a 75 (+5) to go with his 70 which gave him a total of 145 (+3). This was good enough to crown him BB&O Seniors Champion for 2018. Back in second and 4 shots adrift on 147 was Julian Hill (The Berkshire) who added a 72 to go with his first round of 77. A further shot adrift on 148 compiling of 71 on day 1 and 79 on day 2 was Mike Sanders (Beaconsfield).

In addition to the overall Champion there were four age group winners. The winner of the 55-59 age category was Columb who added this trophy to the overall trophy. The winner of the 60-64 age category was David Niven (Newbury & Crookham). The winner of the 65-69 age category was Peter Turner (Cotswolds Club). The winner of the 70+ age category was former BB&O President and home member Rod Crisp. The net section was won by Robert Gill (Gerrards Cross) with a net score of 146. In second losing out on countback to Robert was Steve Webb (Henley).

Our thanks must go to Ellesborough Golf Club and its members for allowing us to host our Seniors Championship in 2018. The course was set up beautifully and it proved to be a real test of golf.
